In reviewing this body of work, I realize how much these paintings touch on the social and cultural changes that were occurring in the late 1960’s. My intent was to show, in a humorous yet serious way, how each of us is controlled by a “mechanical hand” of culture and history, especially in the solitude of urban life. My hope was that people could sense this control and divest themselves of their conditioning and renew their spirit and soul. Today, I realize that this same struggle endures and I accept the manifest difficulties in “real” change.
