In 1976, I saw my first professional soccer game in England and became fascinated by the “texture” of a crowd. Studying my 35mm slide of a crowd, I noticed the relationship between the “grain” of a photograph (popular in 1960’s fine art photography) and the nuances of color and light of individual faces in a crowd. I produced one large painting of a crowd and then abstracted from that painting, a dozen individuals into smaller portraits.
